A major activity of the Board is to track donations (dollars and in-kind materials) and expenditures to meet IRS exempt status. In addition, CMIQ allocates funds in support of identified Quilcene Conversations projects.

Funding currently comes from donations from local residents. In the future CMIQ may submit applications for grants from foundations and government agencies and/or have fundraising events.

Short Background

At the Quilcene Conversations gathering at the Quilcene Community Center on February 19, 2011, four planning groups picked projects from a community-generated master list. Project coordinators were selected and each group was organized to complete its project(s) within one year.

Although volunteer work was the most valuable resource, the volunteers contributed their own money to complete the projects, as no outside funds were available. There have been many successfully completed community building projects including the new Gateway south of town, other newly re-landscaped beds, a swim float in the bay, holiday decorations and more.

Why Create a 501(c) 3 Non-profit?

In May 2011, the project coordinators, facilitators and developers of Quilcene Conversations came together in response to requests for a 501(c) 3 Corporation to provide tax-exempt status for donations. Donors would be able to contribute to specific projects or an undesignated fund for CMIQ at the US Bank in Quilcene. While this was attractive to many of the volunteers, it also responded to several requests from Quilcene citizens who said they could no longer physically volunteer but would like to make a financial contribution to the community.

Local Board Established

In June 2011, CMIQ was formed, Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws were established, and state certification was received.
