Indian Island Commanding Officer to speak at our Quilcene Meeting

Commander Michael Yesunas, Commanding Officer of Naval Magazine Indian Island, will discuss Ammunition Depot operations and certain economic and ecological impacts on the local area.

Kayak Brinnon at New Location
Kayak Brinnon is open year round from 10AM-6PM; all rentals, tours, and deliveries can be arranged by phone or e-mail. However, starting in May 2015 they will ‘open’ for the season at their new location! They will be located next to the Brinnon General Store (mile marker 305) on Highway 101 in Brinnon. Stop by in May and visit them at their new spot!

New Website for Shrimpfest
Shrimpfest 2015 is just around the corner! Prepare yourself for this fun, annual event by getting the latest information from their new website!

Quilcene Historical Museum’s "Raise the Roof" Campaign
The Quilcene Historical Museum has embarked on a campaign titled "Raise the Roof." The goal is to raise $200,000 to restore the Mansard Roof on the Worthington House. They are 35% of the way there thanks to donations from the community and the Norman Archibald Charitable Foundation, however they need help to reach their goal so that work can begin in June 2015. Please help them reach their goal and make this a reality!

Olympic National Forest Campground Host Position Available
The Hood Canal Ranger District is outreaching to fill one Volunteer Campground Host position at Seal Rock Campground in Brinnon. Hosts are expected to be on site 5 days a week during the season (Late April-Labor Day) and a host site will be provided. Hosts will perform daily cleaning and minor maintenance of this busy campground. If you are interested in meeting new people and helping visitors enjoy the National Forest, please contact Nicole LaGioia, Recreation Specialist: 360-765-2213.

Brinnon School PTO Seeks Donations
The Brinnon School PTO is accepting donations of new and used goods for their annual Spring Auction. To schedule a drop off time, please contact Nicole Norris at: 360-531-4178. The Auction date is April 25th, 2015. Doors open at 10AM.

Vote for Brinnon’s 2015 Honorary Mayor
The Brinnon Parks and Recreation District is accepting nominations for Brinnon’s Honorary Mayor for 2015. George Sickel was last year’s honorary mayor. The District is using this contest as a fund raiser in support of their operating budget. Those who are 10 years of age and over can cast their ballot for just $1. Animals and the Commissioners can not be nominated.

Ballots are available at local businesses and at the Brinnon Community Center.
Ballots can be turned in at the Brinnon Community Center or mailed to :PO Box 643, Brinnon, WA 98320. For more information, contact Commissioner Nichole Black at 360-301-0844.

Kathleen Kler, our new County Commissioner representing District 3 (Brinnon / Quilcene / Coyle / Pt Ludlow) is encouraging stronger representation from District 3 citizens on the County’s Boards and Commissioners. Please consider volunteering some of your time to one of the following advisory positions:

1) Solid Waste Advisory Board
2) Parks and Recreation
3) Marine Resources Committee
Volunteers Sought for Various Projects in Quilcene
Quilcene Resource Guide: a compendium of Quilcene businesses, non-profits, public agencies, churches, and membership organizations. The completed Quilcene Resource Guide will be very useful to everyone who lives here, and those who want to know more about our community – especially about its businesses. A draft of the Guide can be viewed here.

Habitat for Humanity is involved in home restoration, clean-up and repair in the Quilcene area. Volunteers are needed and may contact Jaime Maciejewski, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity in Port Townsend, at: 360-379-2827.

Community Workshop: A place where people with skills but no workshop area could come to build or repair their possessions. Envisioned as a weatherproof enclosed space with donated tools and a membership fee, supplied with instructors and safety monitors. Contact Joe Vierra at 360-271-4382 or Adina Vierra at 360-333-2228 if you can help make this vision a reality.

Local Products Factory: An experienced small factory owner and artist proposed we establish a factory to manufacture objects from local wood for retail sale. He will organize the factory operations and train local workers to operate the equipment. Contact David Haakenson at 360-765-0935 if you would like to be involved.

Develop a Maker Space: A workshop/exploration/development space where local entrepreneurs can develop their ideas and start production. A temporary home for ideas to mature into salable products. Contact Tom Brotherton at 360-765-0901 to be a part of this project.

WDFW: Upcoming Opening Days
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) has announced some upcoming Opening Days. For most, a valid 2015-16 fishing or hunting license will be required to participate. The exception is young people under age 15, who can fish for free. Licenses and permits are available online: , by phone: 1-866-246-9453, and from sporting goods stores and other retail license dealers around the state. A list of license vendors.

April 15th – The general spring turkey hunt opens for hunters of all ages and runs through May 31.

April 16th – Lingcod fishing season opens in the Neah Bay area (Marine Area 4).

April 17th-24th – An eight-day morning razor clam dig is tentatively scheduled on various ocean beaches.

April 25th – Hundreds of lakes open to trout fishing for the biggest "opening day" of the year.

May 2nd – Shrimp Season opens in Marine Area 12. Open May 2, 9, 11 & 13, 2015, from 9AM to 1PM.
