MARCH 7 COMMUNITY MEETING ON PARKS IS CANCELLED

In a Feb. 17 Google Group post, we suggested you “save the date” for a March 7 meeting at the Quilcene School, where Quilcene citizens could learn more about the proposal for a Metropolitan Park District (MPD) that would manage and operate all of Jefferson County’s and the City of Port Townsend’s park facilities and programs. The County & City will depend on citizens representing all of East Jefferson County to work out the details of this plan.

That March 7 has now been POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

Why? The Quilcene meeting is premature.

The citizens selected by the County Commissioners and the PT City Council to serve on the “MPD Steering Group” will be formally appointed on Monday (March 4). Until the Steering Group has opportunity to meet and schedule its outreach hearings, there are no details about boundary considerations and scope of services.

What should we do while we wait for this detailed information?

The best thing will be to understand how we got to this point. A citizens’ Exploratory Committee worked for 14 months in 2011-2012 to examine the options for parks and recreation. Recently the County and the City decided jointly to appoint a citizen Steering Group to work through all the details of a Metropolitan Park and Rec District, and present a proposal to the voters.

Within the next few days, we will send you links to summary documents that explain the process to date.

This is worth watching closely. We’ll do our best to keep you informed.

Meanwhile, remove the March 7 "save the date" from your calendar, and watch for further info!!
